Super Bowl LV: a city built inside a Tampa stadium

The Weeknd’s 2021 halftime show turns a fixed stadium-end set, fabricated skyline and coordinated screens into a performance for both the Tampa crowd and television viewers.

The Weeknd’s Super Bowl LV halftime show took place at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa on 7 February 2021. Its cityscape was built inside that venue. The production story is therefore about transforming one performance site, rather than travelling between the buildings suggested by the scenery. Accounts from the people who made the set and screen content explain how the same stadium could offer different experiences to its live crowd and television audience.

Markers identify buildings or documented location references. They do not mark an exact recording room, stage position or camera angle.

A stage prepared at the stadium end

The original production-design record identifies a stage built at the far end of the field before the show. That differed from assembling a rolling stage on the field during the halftime interval. The stadium’s existing structure became part of the production plan. A broad venue reference is enough to anchor the history; the article does not justify a surveyed performer position or a present visitor route through the temporary set. [3]

A fabricated city

ATOMIC’s own project account describes making illuminated signs, large silhouette flats and an LED-edged, backlit skyline. The fabricator worked within a group of scene shops led by production designer Bruce Rodgers, bringing creative director Es Devlin’s vision into physical form. The city was made through production work inside the stadium. Its buildings are scenic elements, not evidence that the performance was filmed at a second urban location. [1]

One venue, two audiences

Screens producer Drew Findley described content designed for both people in the stadium and viewers at home. During Can’t Feel My Face, screens and lighting continued animating for the live audience while the broadcast followed the performer into the Infinity Light Room. The difference matters geographically: what a camera shows is not the whole venue experience. A television image can focus attention on one constructed space while another part of the audience sees a wider production. [2]

A moon aligned for one camera

Findley also explained a visual transition during I Feel It Coming. A moon moved from the main set screen toward the stadium’s larger screen, with their different depths accounted for in the design. The team worked with director Hamish Hamilton on the camera position and recreated it in three-dimensional software. That specific viewing relationship made separated surfaces appear continuous. It is a production perspective, not another astronomical or geographic performance site. [2]

The setting is temporary, the venue is real

The production accounts describe a collaboration between the stadium setting, fabricated scenery and the screen system. Their different scales came together for one performance. The set’s city could be dismantled, while Raymond James Stadium remained the canonical venue. The published production record and fabricator’s account make that distinction legible without suggesting that a contemporary stadium visit can recreate the show’s temporary rooms, skyline or camera views. Consult the stadium operator for current events and access. The 2021 skyline, screens and Infinity Light Room were temporary production elements, not permanent visitor attractions. This venue is distinct from the demolished Tampa Stadium associated with the 1991 Super Bowl.
