Privacy and analytics

You can explore Where It Was without accepting optional analytics. Use “Analytics preferences” at the bottom of any page to accept, reject or change your choice.

Who operates this site

Where It Was is operated by Oliver Brinicombe-Scarr, based in the United Kingdom. For privacy questions or requests, contact hello@whereitwas.com.

What optional analytics measures

After you accept, we use Google Analytics to understand page visits, map interactions, recognised catalogue searches, filters, directions, shares and affiliate clicks. We use the city, title and location you explore, rather than your device’s precise location. Unrecognised search text is not sent to analytics. Page query strings and fragments are excluded; only approved campaign labels are retained.

When enabled, Vercel Web Analytics provides an additional consent-controlled measure of visits. Counts may differ between providers.

Affiliate measurement

After acceptance, our own click ledger can record which affiliate item you viewed or clicked, its merchant, page and placement, approved campaign labels, and a temporary random session identifier. It does not record your name, email address or IP address. A click does not tell us whether you purchased anything. Booking and shopping links work if you reject analytics.

Your choices and storage

We remember your choice on this device for up to six months. Google Analytics may set its own analytics cookies after acceptance. Approved campaign information is kept in this tab for a session, and the ledger uses a first-party session cookie lasting up to 30 minutes. Rejecting optional analytics stops further measurement and removes our session attribution and Google Analytics cookies accessible to this site. Previously collected records are not automatically erased.

Retention and overseas processing

Detailed affiliate records are deleted by a daily cleanup once they are more than 90 days old. Google Analytics user and event data retention is set to two months, with extension on new activity disabled; aggregated reports may remain available longer. Vercel’s included analytics plan provides 30 days of viewable history.

Our affiliate database is hosted by Supabase in the western United States. Google, Vercel and their service providers may also process data outside the United Kingdom. Their published data-processing terms describe the safeguards available for international transfers: Supabase, Vercel and Google. Contact us for information about processing your data.

Your privacy rights

Optional analytics relies on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time through Analytics preferences. To ask about access, correction, deletion, restriction or portability of personal data, contact hello@whereitwas.com. Temporary identifiers can limit our ability to identify a particular record; we will explain what information we need to handle your request. You can also raise a concern with the UK Information Commissioner’s Office.

Other services

Maps, externally hosted images and optional embeds contact their providers to display content. External booking and shopping websites have their own privacy practices. Our hosting and infrastructure providers may process connection information, including IP addresses, to deliver and secure the site; those are separate from our commercial click ledger.
