Who operates this site
Where It Was (whereitwas.com and the Where It Was apps) is operated by Oliver Brinicombe-Scarr, based in the United Kingdom. Contact: hello@whereitwas.com.
What is protected
Unless a credit says otherwise, Where It Was owns or licenses:
- the writing: place stories, World and People pages, city guides, captions, quest and trail descriptions;
- the design: Worlds and their interactive scenes, illustrations, stamps, badges, icons, map styling and the look of the site and apps;
- the software: the website and app code, and the way they work;
- the collection of locations: the selection, arrangement, research and verification of places, links, coordinates and connections, which is protected as a database (including the UK and EU database right) as well as by copyright where it applies.
What you may do
- Browse, save places, plan trips and use the site and apps for your own personal, non-commercial purposes.
- Share links to any page, and share the share images we provide for that purpose.
- Quote short passages for criticism, review, news reporting or quotation, with a credit to Where It Was and a link, as UK fair dealing (and similar laws elsewhere) allows.
- Use third-party material under its own licence, as credited on the page (see below).
What is not allowed
Without written permission, please don’t:
- copy, republish or sell our writing, designs, stamps, Worlds or software;
- scrape, crawl or bulk-download the site, apps or their data, or extract or re-use all or a substantial part of the location collection, including by repeated extraction of smaller parts;
- use our content or data to build a competing service or dataset, or to train or fine-tune machine-learning or AI models;
- frame the site, remove credits or notices, or present our work as your own.
Search engines indexing public pages in line with our robots.txt are welcome. Nothing here limits what applicable law or a licence allows you to do.
Third-party material and licences
Some material belongs to others and stays under its own terms. It is credited where it appears:
- Photographs from Wikimedia Commons and other open archives are used under their stated licences (such as CC0, CC BY and CC BY-SA, or the public domain). Each keeps its creator credit and licence; you may reuse them under that licence, not under ours.
- Street View imagery is © Google and shown through Google’s own services under Google’s terms. It is not stored or redistributed by Where It Was.
- Maps use data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence.
- Reference data from Wikidata is used under CC0; facts are cited to their published sources on each page.
- Event listings link to the official venue, organiser or ticketing page, which is the authority on dates, prices and availability.
Names, titles and trade marks
Film, television, music and other titles, names, characters and logos belong to their respective owners. They are used only to identify the works and the real places connected with them. Where It Was is independent and is not affiliated with, sponsored or endorsed by any studio, broadcaster, label, artist or rights holder. We don’t use film or television stills.
Accuracy and visiting places
Locations are researched from published sources and marked with how precise they are, but places change and sources can be wrong. Many locations are private homes, businesses or restricted sites: please respect residents, staff, signage and the law, and never enter private property without permission. Information is provided for general interest, without warranty, and you visit places at your own risk. Nothing in this notice limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
Links and affiliate partners
We link to other websites, which have their own terms and privacy policies. Some links to stays, tours, books, posters and other products are affiliate links: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. See the affiliate disclosure.
Rights questions and takedown
If you believe something on Where It Was infringes your rights, is wrongly credited or should not be shown, email hello@whereitwas.com with the page address and what the problem is. We review every request promptly and remove or correct material where appropriate. Requests to licence our content or data are welcome at the same address.
Governing law
This notice is governed by the laws of England and Wales. Consumers keep any rights they have under the law of the country where they live.
