The difficult Berlin sessions at Hansa and the improvised breakthrough that became One.
U2 began recording Achtung Baby at Hansa Studios in Berlin in October 1990. The band’s official account describes difficult sessions, arguments about musical direction and a breakthrough through improvisation. That makes Hansa more than a studio credit. It is the documented setting for the album’s struggle to find a new language and for the emergence of One.
These historical places remain in the list while their map positions are researched.
The October sessions place the band in a studio already associated with Bowie and Iggy Pop. U2’s account describes disagreement over both the direction of the music and the quality of the material. The location matters as a working environment in which that uncertainty was confronted. It does not establish that every part of the finished album was recorded there. This is the Berlin chapter of Achtung Baby, with its scope tied to the sessions that the official archive describes. [3]
Hansa’s artist catalogue lists Achtung Baby and Heroes, making the shared studio an explicit point of connection between U2 and Bowie. U2’s archive says the improvisation that became One broke through weeks of difficulty. The records share a venue, not an identical creative story. The same canonical studio Place can serve both Worlds while each retains its own recording Moment. Hansa’s contact page also makes the current boundary clear: visits and tours must be booked. Hansa is a working studio. Its operator allows booked visits and tours only, so arrange access through the official contact information. Do not assume that a street visit includes the rooms used during the Achtung Baby sessions.
