About Where It Was

A guide to real places connected to film, television, music and culture. Start with a story you love, then explore the places that give it a setting.

From the work to the place

A film, programme, song or other work leads to particular moments and their connected places. Worlds bring related stories together; city collections offer another way into the geography. People profiles connect creative credits to the works and places in the collection. A shared credit does not, by itself, mean someone visited every location.

Read the connection, not just the pin

Filming locations, depicted settings, recording history and performance venues describe different relationships. Read the account for the connection being made, and follow its source links where provided.

A map marker can identify a building, site or wider area. It does not, by itself, establish an exact camera position or current visitor access. Historical context and present-day conditions can differ; use the location’s own access notes when planning a visit.

Explore in your own way

Public stories are available without an account. You can also create a free account to save places or subscribe to the newsletter. Optional analytics is separate from membership; read the privacy and analytics information for your choices.
