An empty field in Hertfordshire. Open the gates: each tap lets in 12,500.

It started with a record shop on Fog Lane and a basement on Little Peter Street. Five years later it was this field. Wait for green, then go and stand where it happened.

Noel is said to have written the shop into Shakermaker while sitting at the traffic lights outside. Press the button. When the lights change, cross to the next stop: the shop, the park, and two houses that stay private.

Sifters Records

Pete Howard opened Sifters in 1977 and still runs it.

The Gallagher brothers came in a lot in the late 1980s and early 1990s. When the Supersonic sleeve came out, the shop knew them at once.

Fans still come, and Manchester music tours stop here almost every week. It mostly stocks records made before 1990.

On 31 May 1993 the bill was Boyfriend, 18 Wheeler and Sister Lovers. Oasis were not on it, and played anyway.

Sister Lovers’ Debbie Ellis dared Noel to come. Oasis booked a van and drove north. Little Peter Street to St Vincent Street is 296 km as the crow flies.

Take the shot. Keep shooting.

The cover of (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? was shot on Berwick Street at about 5am on a Sunday.

The two men passing are Brian Cannon and the DJ Sean Rowley; the producer Owen Morris is in the background. It was chosen because the street was full of record shops. At that hour it was empty.

5am. The street is empty. Shoot.

Cannon’s design company, Microdot, made the sleeves for everything Oasis released in the 1990s. Berwick Street Market dates back to 1778. Sister Ray and Reckless Records still sell vinyl on the street.

A public street. The market runs Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm.
