The Freddie Mercury Museum, Stone Town

He was born in Shangani, the old quarter of Stone Town, and spent his early years there.

The Freddie Mercury Museum opened here on 24 November 2019, with photographs lent by Queen Productions. It tells his childhood in Zanzibar, his schooling in Panchgani in India and his Zoroastrian roots.

After the revolution of 1964 his family left Zanzibar and settled in Feltham, west London, that November.

Kenyatta Road, Shangani. A small museum in the old town. It was open daily from 9am to 8pm in 2025: check before you go.

From the summer of 1969 Freddie ran a stall here, selling his own artwork and second-hand clothes; Roger Taylor helped.

He kept the stall going after Queen’s first album came out.

The market opened on 15 September 1967 and closed on 29 January 2000; the building came down in 2001.

The building is gone. The site is on the north side of Kensington High Street, near Kensington Church Street: free to walk past.

On 24 August 1975 Queen began recording “Bohemian Rhapsody” here. Brian May remembered holding the tape up to a light and seeing through it.

In July 1974 they had cut backing tracks here for Sheer Heart Attack, “Killer Queen” among them. Charles and Kingsley Ward built it on their family farm: the world’s first residential recording studio.

Mountain Studios was in the Casino. Queen first recorded there in 1978, bought it a year later and kept it until early 1993.

In his final months Freddie recorded his very last vocals here; the exhibition keeps the control room, the microphone and his chair.
