A New York film built in two cities. The firehouse is half a building in Tribeca; its insides were shot 3,936 km away in Los Angeles. Sweep the city, slide the pole, and count what was really there.

Half a firehouse, in two cities
Slide down to Los Angeles.
The front door is on North Moore Street. The rooms behind it were filmed in an old fire station on Fifth Street, Los Angeles. Take the pole.

A Tribeca hotel at 2 Sixth Avenue with 201 rooms, a jazz club and its own small cinema. Not a filming location: it is simply in the firehouse’s neighbourhood.
The film opens here: a ghost pushes books from the shelves and gobbles up papers in the stacks, and Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz and Egon Spengler are called in.
Six books, one on top of the other, neatly.

Fired.
At the start of the film the three are fired from Columbia’s fictional parapsychology department. In Ghostbusters II Sigourney Weaver walks into a fictional institute that is really Columbia’s Avery Hall.
The Morningside campus is open only to Columbia ID holders, registered alumni and approved guests: the public cannot walk in.

Dana Barrett lives in this Upper West Side building in the film; NYC Tourism calls the Art Deco co-op an architectural landmark.
Its bricks run from dark purple at street level to lighter purple, then pale yellow near the top, so that the sun always seems to be shining on it. The extra eight floors, the rooftop temple and the gargoyles in the film were never here: they were built on a sound stage in Hollywood.
Schwartz & Gross designed the eighteen-storey building; it went up in 1929–30 and has been a co-operative since the late 1940s.
A private co-op: look up at it from Central Park West or from the park side of the road.

Home is half a firehouse.
The gang reclaims the firehouse with the next generation of Spenglers. In 2021 a Buffalo fan club gave the firefighters a weatherproof sign to hang outside on special occasions; the original was nearly 40 years old and had lost a finger.
It is still an active firehouse. Lt. Vincent G. Halloran of the company did not come back from the World Trade Center on 11 September 2001.
