Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson in Sofia Coppola’s 2003 film: two Americans in one Tokyo hotel, both awake at night. Ride down into the city, then take a day in Kyoto.

Bob and Charlotte both stay at the Park Hyatt; the film’s scenes here include Charlotte’s room above the city, the bar and the pool. The hotel occupies the top floors of Shinjuku Park Tower, from the 39th to the 52nd. Japan’s tourist board says the Park Hyatt was the one place that gave the production two floors, for a short time.

Red. Wait for the green.

Bob and Charlotte wade into the intersection on their way to explore the city. About 2,500 people, coming from three directions, cross every time the lights change. The film shows the busy intersection in front of Shibuya Station’s Hachikō Exit.
A public crossing, busy at every hour. Cross with the crowd when the lights change.
On a night out, Bob, Charlotte and their friends sing karaoke here; the scenes were shot in rooms 601 and 602. Some of the private rooms have windows looking down on the neon-lit city. Time Out sends fans to ask for room 601, in the annex building.

By shinkansen, alone
Unsure about her future, Charlotte goes to Kyoto alone by shinkansen. She arrives at Kyoto Station. The station is about 4 km from Heian Jingū as the crow flies.

The gate is at the top of the steps.
The temple compound was built in the 13th century for the Emperor Kameyama and later became a Zen temple. The gate standing today was rebuilt in 1628 by Tōdō Takatora, to mourn his men who fell in the summer campaign at Osaka. It is about 22 metres high and counted among Japan’s three great gates.
Daily 8.40am–5pm to 30 November, 8.40am–4.30pm December to February; last entry 20 minutes before closing. Closed to visitors 28–31 December. Climbing the gate costs ¥600.

There is a short shot of Heian Shrine, where Charlotte reads her fortune.
Shake the box for a numbered stick.
An active shrine, open every day. Fortunes are tied in the gravel courtyard. On 22 October the Jidai Matsuri procession arrives here.

A street in Tokyo, the last scene
In the last scene, Bob whispers something in Charlotte’s ear.
Sofia Coppola says what Bill Murray whispers to Scarlett Johansson was never meant to be anything: she meant to decide on a line later and add it, and never did. She likes Murray’s answer, that it is between lovers.
