Brooklyn Nine-Nine

There is no 99th Precinct. Its front door is the 78th, on Sixth Avenue in Brooklyn, and the 78th’s patch takes in Prospect Park, where dogs run free before nine in the morning. Cheddar is waiting on the Long Meadow.

The 78th Precinct’s station house is the exterior of the show’s fictional 99th Precinct.

It stands at 65 Sixth Avenue in Prospect Heights, near the Barclays Center and Atlantic Terminal: a Renaissance Revival building of 1925.

The real precinct covers Park Slope, Prospect Park and parts of Gowanus and Prospect Heights, which is the 99th’s patch too; a precinct map in the background of one scene matches the 78th’s. The 74th Precinct was merged into the 78th, so Brooklyn has no 74th today.

The precinct’s interiors were a set built on the CBS Studio Center lot in Studio City, California.

A 2014 set visit by The Gazette found the show shooting at a CBS studio, photographed Chelsea Peretti and Stephanie Beatriz in the break-room set, and recorded Holt taking questions in his office.

Dan Goor credited Thinnes and Call with inventing full menus for the show’s made-up restaurants.

Prospect Park · inside the 78th

Fetch,
Cheddar.

Prospect Park lies inside the 78th Precinct. Dogs may run off the leash from 6 to 9am and 9pm to 1am on the Long Meadow (but not its ballfields), the Nethermead and Peninsula Meadow. At all other times, and everywhere else in the park, they must be leashed.

Stewart, a corgi, played Holt’s dog Cheddar for longer than any other dog to take the part since 2013. He died in July 2019, aged 13.

In May 2018, days after Fox cancelled the show, NBC picked it up for a sixth season of 13 episodes.

NBC’s sister studio Universal Television made the show, with Fremulon, Dr. Goor Productions and 3 Arts Entertainment.

NBC Entertainment’s chairman, Robert Greenblatt, said NBC regretted letting the show go to Fox and was bringing it back to its rightful home; Mike Schur, Dan Goor and Andy Samberg had all grown up on NBC. He told reporters NBC had passed when Schur and Goor first offered it the show in 2013.

At the 71st Golden Globes here on 12 January 2014, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the first-season Fox comedy won best comedy series.

It beat The Big Bang Theory, Girls, Modern Family and Parks and Recreation. The same night Andy Samberg won best actor in a comedy series, for Jake Peralta. Those were the show’s only two Golden Globe nominations, and it won both.

Beatriz, who is bisexual like Rosa, said Goor had wanted a bisexual voice on Rosa’s coming-out story. The producers half-joked about a crossover with another NBC series.
