Wilmington, North Carolina

Capeside was never a town. It was wherever the camera pointed in Wilmington. Pan the camera

Turn the camera round.

Facing the water: this is the Icehouse, the Potters’ restaurant in Capeside.

Joey’s sister Bessie runs the Icehouse. It was two buildings: the outside was the Dockside, the Icehouse only while the camera faced the water, and the inside was a bar downtown.

The Dockside Restaurant appeared as the Icehouse, the Potters’ restaurant, when the camera faced the water.

The Icehouse’s interiors were shot at a different place: the Icehouse bar in downtown Wilmington.

Building work near the real downtown bar later led the producers to write the Icehouse out of the story by burning it down.

Hewletts Creek and Airlie Road

The creek.

Kevin Williamson grew up by a North Carolina creek, wanting to make films. The show found its own creek on the edge of Wilmington, and a garden down the road for a wedding that was only a dream.

The houses on the creek

The Leery, Lindley and Potter homes were private houses on the shores of Hewletts Creek, a stream in New Hanover County.

Kevin Williamson based the series on his own youth near a North Carolina creek, as a boy who wanted to make films.

For its first four seasons the show was filmed mainly at EUE/Screen Gems Studios and on location around Wilmington.

It was the first production to take up a number of the studio’s sound stages for years at a time; One Tree Hill later used some of the same stages.

The show wrapped in April 2003 and its sets are no longer in use.

Kevin Williamson created it and came back to write the two-hour finale. The WB showed the first episode on 20 January 1998 and the last on 14 May 2003. Kerr Smith and Busy Philipps starred with the four leads; Philipps played Audrey, Joey’s room-mate at Worthington. Paula Cole’s “I Don’t Want to Wait” became the theme after the rights to the first choice could not be secured.
