Stadlandet

The Norwegian Film Commission lists Stadlandet, in Vestland, among the Norwegian locations for Dune.

Its page credits the windswept ground and natural light at Stadlandet, which needed minimal visual doubling.

Wikipedia names Stadlandet as the double for Caladan, the Atreides ocean home world.

The crew reached Norway in August 2019 for the last segment of principal photography, then came back in the autumn for aerial footage.

The stage

Three planets under one roof

The practical interior sets for the three planets, Caladan among them, were built on the studio’s soundstages and backlots.

ORIGO Studios lists Dune as a 2019 production it serviced, with Warner Bros. Pictures among the clients it names. The studio has 11 stages, nine soundstages and two VFX or multimedia stages, and a ten-acre backlot.

Wikipedia gives principal photography as 18 March to 26 July 2019, beginning at ORIGO Studios. Parts of the Arrakeen invasion, with extras and practical explosions, were shot on Budapest backlots, Wikipedia says.

Ornithopter interiors were filmed on hilltops outside Budapest, on a 25-foot sand-coloured ramp that ran 360 degrees round a large gimbal, so the crew could use sunlight.

More filming took place in Budapest by August 2020, Wikipedia says. Hungary’s 30 per cent tax rebate helped the production, The Cinemaholic says.

Setting out

Go and find the sand

Norway, Jordan, the Emirates and Hungary are four separate trips. Myresanden’s pin is the nearby hamlet of Drage, and Liwa’s is the district; the sources name no exact camera points. The Budapest studio is a working lot and takes no visitors on the sources read.
