A summer story shot between early September and November 1979, in a Scout camp that is still run for Scouts. This page is about the places and the calendar: the camp, a diner, a theatre, a gate.

Hardwick

A camp that is still a camp

Wikipedia says most camp scenes were shot at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco, a working Boy Scout camp in Hardwick, and that it plays Camp Crystal Lake.

The camp’s own website describes it as “Excellence in Scouting since 1927”. A fan location list puts the camp about six miles north of Blairstown, and says the camp entrance and a cabin appear in the film.

The tour organiser says the camp is private property of the Northern New Jersey Council, Scouting America, and is open to the public only on official tour dates.

A New Jersey travel page says the camp held its first official Friday the 13th tour on 13 May 2011, and that tours sell out well ahead. Wikipedia says that in April 2018 the camp held Crystal Lake Tours to nine filming locations on the property, and that Adrienne King attended.

The tour page describes small guided walking tours of up to about a mile, with time at each filming location for photographs. Past tours, that page says, have included full walking tours, shorter lakefront tours, flashlight sessions, canoeing, archery and meals in the historic dining hall.

The shoot calendar

Summer on screen, autumn on the call sheet

Slide from the first official day to the end of November 1979. The trees change with the calendar. The snow is a switch of its own, because no source gives its day.

4 September 1979. The first official day of shooting. Snow off. The prologue is on the lake.

4 September 1979

A production report gives 4 September 1979 as the first official day of shooting at the camp area; some sources say 10 September.

In between

The story is set in summer. The shoot ran into autumn, and these pages give no day-by-day record of what was shot when.

November 1979

Reshoots and added photography ran as late as November 1979.

Lake or barn

Wikipedia says unexpected snow forced the opening prologue to move from the lake to a barn, although the film is set in summer.

Blairstown and Hope

Down the road to the villages

Blairstown is about six miles south of the camp by a fan list’s count, and Hope is a few more. These are the places that are still ordinary: a theatre, a diner, a gate, a shop.
