A Las Vegas headliner and the young writer who sharpens her act. The residency was mostly made in Los Angeles, which is the best joke of all: every place below is a set-up and a punchline. The double act

Vegas, by way of Los Angeles

Jean Smart plays Deborah Vance, and Hannah Einbinder plays Ava Daniels, the younger writer who works with her.

The series ran on HBO Max for five seasons, from 2021 to May 2026. Its creators are Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky. Smart won the lead comedy actress Emmy for every season, the first woman to win an acting Emmy for every season of a series.

Hacks was shot mainly in Los Angeles. By its third season it had done only a couple of days of location work in Las Vegas. Jean Smart said a night in Las Vegas during the third season was the first time she had shot a single frame of the show there.

Uproxx reported that the show does not use green screen for its Vegas scenes.

Ten bits

Land the beat

Each place is a joke. The set-up is what it plays in the show; the punchline is where it was really shot. Hit Set-up, leave a pause, hit Punchline. Between 0.7 and 1.6 seconds, it lands.

The closer

The old casino

In season 5’s third episode, No New Tricks, Marcus tours a dusty old casino and falls for it. That scene was shot inside Whiskey Pete’s at Primm, not downtown.

The filming place was first reported by Architectural Digest. Whiskey Pete’s has been closed since 2024. The Primm family, who own the land, say several proposals to reopen it are being considered.

The final season was shot almost entirely in Las Vegas, from late 2025 into early 2026. The Plaza gave the season both the inside of Deborah Vance’s comedy club and the outside of The Diva. The Bellagio and Caesars Palace were used that season too.
