The dry summer

It was a record dry year

A record dry spell meant no real fire was allowed. The climax’s explosions used dirt, cork and lights on dimmers.

Me gusta el turismo says the crew built the mill as a full building with four walls, and that the mill and labyrinth were taken down after filming.

Sources

American Cinematographer says the crew wanted open ground ringed by forest. A site in Navarre was dropped when its owner asked for about half the budget, so they chose a place near Segovia, an hour from Madrid.

Go and look

Little is left, and some of it is open

Belchite’s ruins and the church of San Agustín are open by guided visit. San Rafael and El Espinar are ordinary mountain towns. The meadow, the pine woods and the sound stages are named here but not pinned: the sources do not give an exact spot for them.

Sources

The meadow is open ground and the woods are public, but no source gives a point on a map for either. The studios are private, and the sources disagree on which town they are in.
