Sabrina Annlynn Carpenter was born on 11 May 1999 in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, and grew up in East Greenville. When she was ten her father built her a recording studio. She was homeschooled, and moved to Los Angeles at thirteen.
She began studying voice at six and, at about ten, was posting videos of herself singing on YouTube.
In October 2008 she was one of 7,000 entrants in The Next Miley Cyrus Project, an online singing contest run by Miley Cyrus; she placed third in 2010.
Quakertown is a borough of 9,359 people (2020), 35 miles north of Philadelphia. In September 1777 the wagons carrying the Liberty Bell from Philadelphia to Allentown stopped here overnight.

Chailland
After the Paris show she spent a few days in Chailland and recorded new songs at Flow Studios. She told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 that she wrote Espresso there, in a very quick process.
Espresso was written by Carpenter with Amy Allen, Steph Jones and its producer, Julian Bunetta, who has described it starting on that French studio stay.
By Peter Bunetta’s account, the vocals were later done in Julian Bunetta’s studio in Nashville; he says he was not at those sessions. Chailland is a commune on the River Ernée, classed as a Petite Cité de Caractère.

The beach that is a lake
The Espresso video, directed by Dave Meyers, was filmed at Castaic Lake on 26 and 27 March 2024 and came out on 12 April.
She said she had pictured a beach from the day she first heard the song, and wanted the video’s playfulness.
The lake is a reservoir formed by Castaic Dam on Castaic Creek, in the Sierra Pelona Mountains.
