She grew up in a gold-mining town, singing in its bars after closing time. The town later built a museum of her, and sold it for a gold mine. These are the places that are left.

Timmins, Ontario · the 1970s and early 1980s

From the age of eight she sang in Timmins bars to help pay the bills, often for CA$20, between midnight and 1am, after the bar had stopped serving drink.
Born Eilleen Regina Edwards in Windsor, Ontario, in 1965, she moved to her mother’s home town of Timmins as a child after her parents divorced. Her mother married Jerry Twain, an Ojibwe man from the nearby Mattagami First Nation, who adopted the girls; their surname became Twain.
The family had little money and food was often scarce. Her stepfather was violent towards her mother, and she saw it from a young age.

She disliked those bars, but has called them her own kind of performing-arts school. At Timmins High and Vocational School she sang with a local covers band, Longshot, and she graduated in June 1983.

Huntsville, Muskoka · from late 1987

On 1 November 1987 her mother and stepfather were killed in a car accident north of Wawa, Ontario. She went back to Timmins for her younger siblings and moved them to Huntsville, supporting them by singing at Deerhurst.
There she grew from a barroom singer into a theatrical performer, and Nashville music executives saw her perform at the resort.
Deerhurst built up its entertainment programme in the 1980s, and Eileen Twain was one of the singers on its stage. The resort opened in 1896; it was the first big resort on a northern Muskoka lake, reached only by steamboat.

Session notes
She and Lange felt the fiddles did not sound big enough, so Lange brought in four players, Rob Hajacos, Joe Spivey, Glen Duncan and Aubrey Haynie, to play the same part in unison.
For some songs each fiddle had a microphone six to eight inches away; for others all four stood in a semicircle around two Neumann KM 582 microphones.
Engineer Bob Bullock said it made them sound big without being cluttered, unlike one player doubling or tripling a part.
