The rebuilt room

Measured, then rebuilt

Production designer Stephen H. Carter measured the layout of the Globe’s headquarters and used the specs to re-create 120 cubicles in a vacant Sears department store outside Toronto.

Carter also dressed several scenes shot on the Globe’s real premises, including the presses and the library. He said that was production value they could not have got any other way.

Carter kept the 2001 office honest: most staff used old CRT monitors, since flat screens were then a high-end item, and he policed anachronisms.

Executive editor Marty Baron’s office got a pink flamingo like his real one, then it was tucked behind a bookcase because the hot pink distracted.

By June 2017 the Globe had moved out of Morrissey Boulevard for new quarters downtown. Its report says the director spent about a year there researching, and that the newsroom and Spotlight offices were rebuilt in a Toronto warehouse.
