The Shawshank Redemption

In the film Red looks through a shop window on Main Street and sees a compass. It leads him to a tree in a hayfield. The shop is still on Main Street in Mansfield. Stand there, turn the needle, and see what lies on each bearing.

The bearing

Turn the needle

The needle sits at the Mansfield Antiques Gallery on North Main Street, where the film’s compass was in the window. Turn it and see which place lies within 8 degrees. Bearings and distances are straight lines from the shop, worked out from the map positions.

Where the needle starts

In the film Red looks through one of these shop windows and sees a compass, the trail page says. It later leads him to the oak.

It is no longer a pawn shop. The page calls it a boutique selling antiques, décor, furniture and upscale resale.

A working shop. Look in the windows from Main Street first; the trail page gives Monday to Saturday 10 to 5 and Sunday noon to 5, so check before you go.

The oak

The needle’s last stop is gone

It is the tree from the scene where Red crosses a hayfield and lifts stones from a rock wall to find Andy’s gift.

It came down in high winds on 29 July 2011 and again on 22 July 2016. The remains have since been removed.

The oak stood on private farmland off Pleasant Valley Road, near Malabar Farm State Park.

Private farmland, so it is not pinned. Do not trespass, climb the fence or stop on the road; the trail page names a pull-off on Malabar Farm land across the road.

It is the one place here with no pin, because the land is private.

The way there

Pick a bearing and go

Four places are in Mansfield, within a short drive of each other. Malabar Farm and Ashland, then Upper Sandusky, are separate drives, and Sandy Point is a flight away with a seasonal closure. The oak is private farmland and is not pinned.
