The Beijing and Guangzhou concerts, the manager’s preparations and the archive revisited decades later.
Wham! performed at Beijing’s Workers’ Gymnasium on 7 April 1985 and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Guangzhou on 10 April. Participant interviews and the later archival documentary return attention to the preparations and encounters around those two concerts.
These historical places remain in the list while their map positions are researched.
Manager Simon Napier-Bell told interviewer Lyndsey Parker that the arrangements grew through repeated visits and lunches with officials. His recollection describes relationships built over time before the concerts could happen. The two venues were the public culmination of work conducted away from the stage, as a touring pop group entered a different political and organisational setting. [1]
Napier-Bell recalled making a cassette with Wham!’s songs and Mandarin versions sung by Cheng Fangyuan, then distributing tapes with concert tickets. He understood that preparation as a way to make the repertoire familiar before the performances. The cassette linked the coming concerts with listening outside the venues, translating part of the musical encounter before the band arrived on stage. [1]
Sony’s 2026 announcement for Wham! 10 Days in China describes restored and digitised footage alongside interviews with the band, touring party and Chinese audience members. The later film revisits the concerts through people who experienced them from different positions. It gives the journey a second documentary life, joining the original recorded material with memories formed across the following decades. [2]

The Beijing association identifies the indoor gymnasium, not the outdoor Workers’ Stadium. Consult venue operators for present access. The Guangzhou location is the memorial hall in China, not similarly named monuments or gardens elsewhere.
