A world beyond the screen

Downtown streets and a studio lot expose the careful construction of Billy Wilder’s Los Angeles noir.

The city on screen combines real exteriors with meticulously built interiors. A location guide is most useful when it explains that construction. Even the station is deceptive: the “Glendale” scene was filmed at Burbank’s former Southern Pacific depot, not the surviving Glendale station.

Locations are sequenced as a fan journey, not a plot recap. Songs, scenes and episodes lead the route; changed, private and doubled sites are labelled rather than smoothed into fiction.

Paramount Pictures Studios

Paramount stages held key interiors, including the apartment and market scenes. A studio visit explores production history; the original sets are not preserved as a visitor attraction.

Hollywood & Western Building

Hollywood and Western plays the corner described as Vermont and Franklin. The building behind the encounter helps reveal the film’s quietly rearranged geography.

The Spanish Colonial Revival house supplies the Dietrichson exterior. It remains a private residence, so the connection should be understood from the public street only.

What’s happening

A reason to stay longer.

Exact title and mapped-place matches come first. A clearly labelled city film or music programme may follow when it helps extend the journey.

No strong current event association is published for this World. We would rather leave this quiet than force a generic city listing.

A shared venue or neighbourhood connects a programme to the map; a city-level programme connects only to the World’s medium. Neither implies a themed event, cast appearance or artist performance. Confirm dates, location, access and tickets with the organiser.
