Mario's Café, 566 Columbus in san francisco
A sidewalk dining area for a restaurant, located along Columbus Avenue in the North Beach neighborhood. This area was traditionally home to San Francisco's Italian population. Green-white-red bands on the light poles, and signs alternately identifying Columbus Avenue as "Corso Cristoforo Colombo," stand testament to the Italian heritage of the area. From the 1950s on, this area was also home to the Beatnik movement, which was the precursor to the 1960s hippies movement and the 1970s gay rights movement, and gave San Francisco its reputation for welcoming the society's outcasts..
