Firefly is set in 2517 in a new star system: the Alliance holds the central planets, while the outlying worlds of the Rim have little government and look like the American Old West. The real places run the same way: the further from the studio, the dustier the ground.

Whedon did not want to go back to Yucca Flats every other week and call it an alien world; on a small budget the planets kept Earth-like air and colours, and Carey Meyer said the exteriors often felt too Western. Start at the studio gate on Pico Boulevard and measure outwards in real kilometres.

Fox judges the pilot unsuitable to open the series, so “The Train Job” is written and made as a second pilot. It airs first, on Friday 20 September 2002.

Live Design’s account of the pilot assigns three feature stages to the production, without naming the studio.

Production designer Carey Meyer built the ship in two parts, one per deck, with ceilings, working lights and moveable pieces, so a second unit could shoot in one half while the main unit worked in the other.

IMDb lists 20th Century Fox Studios, 10201 Pico Boulevard, Century City, as a Firefly filming location, including for “The Train Job”, “Safe” and “Out of Gas”. Production designer Carey Meyer built the ship in two parts, one per deck, with ceilings, working lights and moveable pieces, so a second unit could shoot in one half while the main unit worked in the other.

Set decorator David Koneff rents the pilot’s furniture, planning to buy it if the show goes on, and dresses the ship in wood and fabric rather than the usual spaceship finishes. Whedon wants a small, working ship like a covered wagon, borrowing from John Ford’s Stagecoach; rooms are painted for their people, rust for Kaylee’s engine room and blue for Simon’s infirmary.

A working studio lot with no public tour. See the gate from Pico Boulevard and stay on the pavement.

The National Park Service took over part of the ranch in 1980. The Woolsey Fire of November 2018 destroyed almost all of its structures.
