Three windows cut in the air: the cast and producers on the series’ first panel, San Diego, 18 July 2019 (Gage Skidmore, CC BY-SA); the Welsh coast it filmed on; and the Oxford bench where the books end. Further down, a knife cuts more.

Filming of His Dark Materials began at Wolf Studios Wales in June 2018. The studio has six sound stages.
In May 2017 the Welsh Government bought the Trident Park units off Ocean Way: two linked high-bay buildings, 253,500 sq ft in all, to be leased to Bad Wolf. Bad Wolf’s Jane Tranter said the studio would give the company a permanent base in Cardiff.
Tom Hooper directed the first eight-part series, adapted by Jack Thorne, for the BBC with New Line Cinema. The cast named that June included Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson, Clarke Peters and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The third season had 333 crew, 203 of them, 60%, based in Wales.

The subtle knife
In The Subtle Knife, Will finds a window in the air near the Oxford ring road and steps out of our world into Cittàgazze, where he meets Lyra. Here, ten real places hang behind the dark. Drag down through any lane to cut a window, or use the buttons.
0 windows open. The air is whole.
Nothing cut yet. Ten places are there, behind the dark, from Oxford to Blaenavon.

The one left
At the end of The Amber Spyglass, published in 2000, Lyra and Will must go back to separate worlds. They agree to sit on the bench in their own Oxfords every Midsummer’s Day. Lyra names the hour: midday.
In The Amber Spyglass, every opened window lets Dust leak away and makes a new Spectre, so the windows are closed. One is left open, out of the land of the dead.
In the far corner of the Lower Garden, Lyra’s bench is a popular place of pilgrimage for the garden’s visitors. The garden calls it a significant place in Pullman’s trilogy, where Lyra and Will meet.
On 22 May 2019 Philip Pullman unveiled a stainless steel dæmon sculpture by Julian Warren, set behind the bench.

One college, two buildings
Lyra grows up in Jordan College, which is not on any map. Choose where it came from.

The college says it inspired Jordan College, Lyra’s first home.
Philip Pullman read English at Exeter College; the college lists him as an alumnus, 1965. Lyra Belacqua first appeared in Northern Lights in 1995.
Pullman’s books have sold more than 49 million copies worldwide.
