Above: St Michael’s Mount, which stood in for High Tide, the Velaryon seat. In the niches, the cast as themselves during the run. King Viserys spends the first season building a model of a city he will never see. Below, you build one out of the real places.
Game of Thrones has its own World, with Dubrovnik, Northern Ireland and the Dragonstone steps: Game of Thrones.
Old Valyria, in pumice
In the series King Viserys builds a model of Old Valyria that takes up more and more of his rooms. It has more than 200 separate miniature buildings. Many were 3D-printed over about two months, and a single building took at least 24 hours to print.
The production designer, Jim Clay, settled on a volcanic look: the team latched on to pumice stone. The smaller pieces were sculpted by hand and given a pumice finish. So print yours: ten plots, a day on the printer for each, and every building that rises is a real place where the series was made.

Warner Bros. Leavesden Studios near Watford was the main production base for the ten-part first season; the interior sets were built and filmed there. An LED video stage put real-time backgrounds behind the actors.
The model grows larger and more elaborate as Viserys’s health and his hold on the throne decline; by the end the newest pieces look rougher, and cobwebs gather.

Trujillo and Cáceres
The square’s equestrian statue of Francisco Pizarro was digitally altered so that a dragon stands where the conquistador does.
Rider: the bronze as you will find it in the square.
El Debate describes the Plaza Mayor as built in the 14th century and dominated by the church of San Martín; in the series it becomes a busy market. Trujillo, a medieval town 45 km east of Cáceres, was used both in House of the Dragon and in Game of Thrones’ seventh season.
HBO came back to Cáceres after using it for King’s Landing in Game of Thrones’ seventh season; streets of the old town again stood in for King’s Landing. It names the Calle de la Amargura, the dome of the Toledo-Moctezuma palace, the Plaza del Conde de Canilleros and the Arco de la Estrella among the places seen.

Season three, 2025
HBO filmed the third season across Anglesey, Conwy and Gwynedd in June and July 2025. Beaumaris Pier is one of the places the Welsh Government names.
The series is based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. The executive producer, Kevin De La Noy, said the cast and crew were delighted to come back to Wales.
Creative Wales gave the season £674,600 of production funding, which the Welsh Government expects to bring £6.7 million to the Welsh economy. Twelve trainees had paid entry-level placements, in costume, set decoration and props, camera and sound, and every crew member had a Welsh-language lesson.
