It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Paddy’s Pub is a South Philadelphia bar that exists only on a street corner in Los Angeles. Its address and its door are on different streets, and the city it plays turns up at night, in the credits. Walk round the block below.

Round the block.

Four sides, four truths about where the bar is. Each lap, the Philadelphia side shows a different view from the night-time credits.

The address

Mateo Street

Mateo Street at Palmetto Street, Arts District, Los Angeles

The bar’s outdoor scenes are shot at a warehouse on Mateo Street. Den of Geek gives the number as 551; Live the Movies and Film Oblivion give 544.

Most of the show is shot in Los Angeles. The gang films on location in Philadelphia once or twice a season.

A working warehouse, not a bar: there is nothing to go into. Look from the pavement on Palmetto Street, round the corner from the Mateo Street address.

Less than $200

The show began as a pilot called It’s Always Sunny on Television, about struggling actors in Los Angeles. Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day made it for less than $200.

FX thought there were too many Los Angeles sitcoms on air, so the show moved to Philadelphia, where McElhenney was born and raised. The first episode aired on 4 August 2005.

The first Paddy’s

Seasons 1 and 2 were mainly filmed in the Herald-Examiner building, where the first Paddy’s bar was a standing set.

Julia Morgan designed the building for Hearst’s Los Angeles Examiner. It was built in 1913. The paper, by then the Herald Examiner, used it until it closed in 1989. Hearst considered pulling it down for a car park, and dropped the idea after public support.

It became a popular filming location even as it fell into disrepair. An $80 million rehabilitation turned it into offices; it reopened in 2021 with Arizona State University as its main tenant.

Offices since its 2021 reopening, with Arizona State University as the main tenant. See the building from Broadway and 11th Street.

Lisa Ann Walter, who plays Melissa on Abbott, called the episode unhinged: the Sunny characters do not follow rules.
