Founded in 1969 as the Bull & Finch Pub, it became the original inspiration for the setting of Cheers.
The producers went to Boston looking for the ideal American bar; after visiting other bars they came back to the Bull & Finch and declared, “This is the place.”
The owner, Tom Kershaw, agreed for just $1 to let them use the pub for establishing shots. It has since been renamed Cheers Beacon Hill and receives hundreds of thousands of visitors a year.
In 1982, the year the show began, Boston Magazine named the Bull & Finch the city’s best neighbourhood bar.
The pub is on the lower level of the building, with two oak bars and booth seating.
Police, fire and service patches cover the walls; the first, from two Coast Guard visitors, was stapled to a liquor cabinet. A plaque for the collection was unveiled on 25 September 2002.
It opens daily at 11am except Christmas Day, takes no reservations, and admits children until 10pm.
