THE PLACES BEHIND THE STORY

A life on the map.

Explore 4 connections. Each connection links to its evidence; outlined circles mark approximate areas, not exact buildings or camera positions.

01 / LOCATION

Pershing Square

The opening looks toward Pershing Square from the surrounding downtown streets. Buildings have changed, so the photograph offers present-day context rather than a frame match.

Marilyn Monroe shoots The Seven Year Itch subway-grate scene

In the early hours of 15 September 1954, Monroe and Billy Wilder's crew filmed the famous dress-lift sequence at Lexington Avenue and East 52nd Street. Fourteen takes were made with a crowd gathered around the corner; because the street sound and crowd overwhelmed production, the film's close-ups were later recreated on a California soundstage. The New York corner is therefore the real-world shoot site, not a claim that every finished frame was photographed here.
