408 South Spring Street, Los Angeles
Braly Block (Continental Building)
Tom points it out from his bench and calls it L.A.’s first skyscraper.
John Parkinson built it in 1902–04. At 175 feet it is counted as the city’s first skyscraper.
It was finished just before the city set a 130-foot height limit in 1905, later raised to 150 feet, and stayed the tallest occupied building for over fifty years, City Hall apart.
Apartments. Stand across Spring Street and look at the cornice of lion heads.
