Spike marks.

A spike mark is a cross of tape on a stage floor that tells you where to stand. Ally’s marks get further from the wings every time: a bar stage, a car park, the Greek, a festival field, Saturday Night Live, the Shrine. Walk out across them. The light opens to the size of each room, and each one is a real place.

Small rooms.

The first night is three rooms, each smaller than the last: a drag bar where Ally sings Piaf, a cop bar where the two of them talk into the night, and a supermarket car park, with a bag of frozen peas, where she sings him a song of her own.

Jackson walks into a drag bar after a show and hears Ally sing; those scenes were filmed at The Virgil.

It was once a gay bar called the Garage. Today it is known for alternative stand-up, including a weekly Monday showcase, Hot Tub.

The venue lists comedy, live music, drag nights and DJ parties, for over-21s with valid ID.

It is a Dodgers fans’ dive bar now, with a Monday dance party, Motown On Mondays.

The Greek.

Ally says no to Jackson’s invitation, then turns up anyway, and he brings her on to sing with him. Audience footage of it goes viral. That stage is the Greek Theatre, an open-air amphitheatre dedicated in 1930.

The festival crowds are real. Cooper shot Jackson’s Coachella and Stagecoach sets on the Empire Polo Club grounds in front of festival crowds, and said his band got eight minutes on stage between two other acts. Fans for the Coachella days were told to come in denim and boots.

The Coachella and Stagecoach concert scenes were filmed on these grounds.

The Coachella scenes were set for 18 and 19 April 2017; the festival app asked fans to come in denim and boots, as for a country show.

Cooper said his band shot its set in eight minutes, between two other acts.

It is a 1,000-acre venue with twelve polo grounds, about 22 miles south-east of Palm Springs.

A private polo club that opens to the public for its festivals, Coachella and Stagecoach, each April.

Two stages a long way from Los Angeles. Ally’s Saturday Night Live spot was shot in the show’s own studio. And at Glastonbury, Cooper filmed four minutes on the Pyramid Stage during part of the set of Kris Kristofferson, who had played the rock star in 1976.

Ally’s Saturday Night Live performance was filmed in the show’s real studio.

Built in 1933 for orchestras and radio shows, it was the world’s largest radio studio when Toscanini’s NBC Symphony Orchestra moved in in 1937. Saturday Night Live has come from here since 1975.

The NBC Studios tour lasts 75 to 90 minutes; studio access varies with the production schedule.

At Glastonbury in June 2017 Cooper filmed a four-minute segment on the Pyramid Stage, using part of Kris Kristofferson’s set.

Kristofferson had played the rock star in the 1976 version of A Star Is Born.

The first Pyramid Stage, in 1971, was a one-tenth replica of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Today’s stands 25 metres high.

A field on a working farm, open only during the festival. The next one runs from 23 to 27 June 2027.

The film’s final scene was shot here as a homage to the 1954 version, which also filmed scenes at the Shrine.

It opened on 23 January 1926 and seats about 6,300.

It has hosted the Grammy Awards and the Academy Awards many times.

The Shrine links two of the cans. In 1954 Esther and Norman first meet at a function there. In 2018 it holds the Grammys, where the night goes wrong for Jackson, and the film’s last scene: after Jackson’s death by suicide, Ally sings at his memorial concert and calls herself Ally Maine.

Fans have identified a 1904 house on East Kensington Road as the home Ally shares with her father. Warner Bros. said only that she is meant to live in Angelino Heights.

Bradley Cooper directed it and played Jackson Maine; Lady Gaga played Ally. Sam Elliott was Bobby, Jack’s older half-brother and manager; Andrew Dice Clay played Ally’s father, Dave Chappelle Jack’s friend Noodles and Anthony Ramos her friend Ramon. Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real were Jackson’s band. Cooper and Gaga sang their lead vocals live on set rather than miming.

Filming began on 17 April 2017 and ran 42 days on a $36 million budget. The film premiered at Venice on 31 August 2018, opened in the United States on 5 October, took $439.9 million worldwide and won the Oscar for Best Original Song.
