Bee GeesBarry, Robin and Maurice Gibb, from an island in the Irish Sea to a studio in North Miami
Tap a brother to hold his note. All three, 1973.
In a Miami studio in 1975 Barry went up into falsetto and stayed there. Push his voice up and the places climb with it, from an island in the Irish Sea to the high notes.
Main Course is the first album where Barry’s falsetto comes to the front. Barry’s places sit along his range, low to high. Push the fader up through the break.

Hello, fairies.
Everyone who crosses the Fairy Bridge greets the fairies out loud, in English or in Manx: Moghrey mie mooinjer veggey, roughly good morning, little folk.
Barry remembers tales of fairies and witches, the Manx mists, and saying hello to the fairies at the bridge as a boy. Not saying hello is thought rude, and locals hold that it can bring bad luck.
You are coming up to the Fairy Bridge.
Some say the first fairy bridge is a few miles away at Kewaigue, down a farm track; it appears as a fairy bridge on an 1869 map.

50 St Catherine’s Drive
50 St Catherine’s Drive in Douglas was the childhood home of Robin and his brothers. A blue plaque above the front door, arranged by Douglas Borough Council, marks it as the Bee Gees’ childhood home. It went up when the Isle of Man Post Office launched a set of stamps featuring Robin. At the launch the Ballakermeen High School choir sang Ellan Vannin, the island song Robin loved.

The Gibbs moved to Chorlton in 1955. They lived on Keppel Road, and the boys went to Oswald Road Primary School, a short walk from the Gaumont. The building opened in 1920 as The Picture House, became the Savoy in 1921 and was renamed the Gaumont in 1946.

For years it held Co-op Funeral Care. In 2019 a volunteer group, Chorlton Community Land Trust, ran a Stayin’ Alive campaign to save it, backed by the wider Gibb family. In 2022 the Co-op agreed a sale to Southway Housing Trust, which spoke of a scheme of affordable homes; the land trust said it would not support demolition.

Cribb Island was a bayside suburb about 16 km north-east of central Brisbane, ringed by creeks but never quite an island. The Gibb family lived there in the late 1950s, and Barry finished school there in 1961. The family home there was called Jackson Estate.
