1 January, Borough. Places to visit: 15 (v.g.)
London, 2001. She counted everything, so this page does too: the real places, the kilometres between them, and every Darcy and Cleaver on the way.
1Where the counting came from
1995
In 1995 the Independent asks Helen Fielding for a weekly column; she writes it in the voice of a character of her own. Each entry opens with Bridget’s weight and the day’s alcohol units, cigarettes and calories, with a note in brackets on how the day went.
1996
Bridget Jones’s Diary comes out as a novel in 1996 and goes to the top of the bestseller list.
Her count, and ours
We kept the habit and changed what gets counted. Nothing here adds up drinks, cigarettes or pounds.
2001–2025
Sharon Maguire directs the first film (2001) and Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016); Beeban Kidron directs The Edge of Reason (2004) and Michael Morris Mad About the Boy (2025).
2Tallies
Bridget’s diary opened every day with a count and a verdict in brackets. Here is 2001. Tick an entry and it goes on the tally: one more real place, the kilometres from the last one, and whether a Darcy or a Cleaver was there.
(not started)
11 entries for 2001. Tick one to count it.
Nothing ticked yet. Each place is taped in here.

3Bedale Street

Bridget’s flat is above the Globe on Bedale Street, by Borough Market. Only the outside was filmed here; the first film’s interiors were shot at Elstree.
For The Edge of Reason the crew were back on Bedale Street in February 2004, and the flat’s interior was rebuilt on a stage at Ealing. The balcony over the front door is where Bridget makes a phone call while Mark Darcy sleeps inside.
Since early 2025 the rooms have housed a run of restaurants. Kismet, a Turkish meyhane, opened there in the summer of 2026.

A pan of soup, made with things from the market. Stir it.
4The last scene
The film makes the last scene look as if it is just outside her door. Run it yourself, from the flat to the street where it was filmed.
Bridget is at the flat. Mark Darcy is somewhere in the snow. Run.

The snowy finale, Bridget’s new diary and Mark Darcy, was filmed at the Royal Exchange Buildings on Cornhill. It is not near the Globe, whatever the film suggests.
The Exchange was officially opened by Elizabeth I in 1571. The Grade I listed building now holds luxury shops, restaurants and a wine bar.
Shops and restaurants under the old trading hall, open Monday to Friday 7.30am to 11pm and Saturday from 11am.
