Monte Mario · 1985

A bar above the city.

To write La vita è adesso he went up to the observatory on Monte Mario every day for two and a half months and sat at a bar table, with the city in front of him.

Day 1 of about 75. 1 of 5 things the stack has opened.

Monte Mario

The album was to have been called Un bar sulla città: a bar above the city.

At 139 metres it is the highest hill of the Farnesina group; the Rome meridian passes the observatory in Villa Mellini.

A nature reserve open from dawn to dusk; the observatory in Villa Mellini is at the top, and a belvedere looks over the city to St Peter’s.

Baglioni was born in Rome on 16 May 1951.

Avvenire describes him as raised in working-class Rome, from number 51 in Monte Sacro, “where it all began”.

Centocelle

Centocelle, east Rome: the pin is Piazza dei Mirti

In 1965 he entered a contest for new voices in his own quarter, Centocelle.

Rockit says that as an artist he was born in a square in Centocelle, and in singing contests lost deep in Lazio.

A year later came his first paid performance, in a variety theatre on the city’s edge, for 1,000 lire.

Avvenire dates the journey from Centocelle to when he was thirteen.

He passed 15 exams in architecture before leaving to make music; when music was not working he went back to his studies for a while.

Years later he was invited to Valle Giulia to give a lecture. At the end the rector asked why he had never graduated.

He graduated in architecture from Sapienza on 24 June 2004, with 108 marks and a thesis on restoring the Gasometro of Rome.

The Piper opened at 9 Via Tagliamento on 17 February 1965. Pink Floyd played it in April 1968, Genesis in the 1970s.

In 1996 Baglioni brought a new version of Questo piccolo grande amore to a Piper Club special, the place where the 1972 version had made its debut almost thirty years before.

On 18 January 2026 police placed the club under preventive seizure, citing structural changes, evacuation risks and missing certificates.

Piazza del Popolo

Campo Marzio, central Rome

Piazza del Popolo is the first track on Questo piccolo grande amore, released by RCA Italiana in September 1972.

Rockit calls the album one of the first concept albums in Italian pop: a love story, complicated by the arrival of Cartolina rosa, the pink card of track ten.

The Flaminio obelisk, about 24 metres tall, stands in the middle; the twin churches on the south side were built in the 1600s.

An open square inside the old northern gate, free at any hour; Flaminio metro is just outside the gate.
