Gjerlev, Jutland · February 1987 · then Notting Hill
A syllable or two at a time.
George Michael wrote the Faith lyrics at the microphone. Chris Porter dropped him in one or two syllables at a time, sometimes after hearing a line once. It took many, many hours.
The organ at the start is a cathedral preset on a Yamaha DX7, and the tune it plays is Freedom, the Wham! single. The drums are a LinnDrum: he did not want real drummers.
Blanks stand in for the words. There are no lyrics on this page.
An empty line. Drop him in.

Puk Studios
George Michael moved to Puk, a residential studio about an hour’s drive from Aarhus, in February 1987, and the Faith sessions began there.
The live room’s floor sat at about the height of the console top, so players were at eye level with the control room.
The studio buildings were badly damaged by fire in 2020 and are privately owned. There is nothing to visit, so it is not on the map.

Finish the vocal in Denmark first.
Careless Whisper was recorded again here after George Michael was unhappy with a first version made with Jerry Wexler in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Eleven saxophonists were auditioned for its solo. Steve Gregory got it, and played it in one breath.

Most of Older was made in Studio 2 as well, over almost a year, in fits and starts. He arrived with the songs in his head and made no demos. He wrote words and melodies while recording, and on about half the tracks he ran his own vocal drop-ins with a remote on a speaker stand in the studio.
Older was the first record on his own label, Aegean, set up after his split from Sony.

Before it, the stadium’s managing director listed his earlier Wembley nights: Live Aid, Wham!’s farewell, the Freddie Mercury tribute and NetAid in 1999.
The stadium was rebuilt on the old site. Tours go behind the scenes into areas usually kept for the stars of sport and music; book on the stadium’s site.
On 23 March 1991, on his Cover to Cover tour, Elton John walked on as a surprise guest to sing Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me with him. That recording became the single.
Elton argued against releasing it. It went to number one in the UK and on the Billboard Hot 100, and was his last American number one in his lifetime.
In 1993 he headlined the Concert of Hope here, on World AIDS Day.

A hall full of nurses.
In December 2006, as he finished his greatest hits tour, he played a free Christmas concert here for about 2,000 NHS nurses.
He had made the promise in the last week of his mother’s life, almost ten years before: if he played his own concerts again, there would be a free show for NHS nurses.

Dawn Mellor’s mural was unveiled at 499 Kingsbury Road in September 2020, one of 24 installations in the Brent Biennial.
It is a montage of his career, from Wham! to the solo years, with scenes from the Careless Whisper and Outside videos. It takes in Kingsbury too: a nod to John Logie Baird, who lived in the area, a Monopoly board and the Yellow Brick Road.

Highgate and Goring-on-Thames · May 2018
He died suddenly at his home in Goring-on-Thames on Christmas Day 2016. After he died, fans left flowers and messages outside his homes in Highgate and Goring-on-Thames.
In May 2018 his father, his sisters and his friend David Austin asked fans to collect the tributes so both homes could go back to how they were, for the neighbours’ sake.
Instead, they suggested volunteering for or giving to one of his favourite charities, or random acts of kindness.
So neither house is on this map. He was a weekly regular at the Miller of Mansfield, a pub in the village, where the staff wanted him left in peace.
