The Rochdale Canal, Sowerby Bridge to Todmorden

Work the locks.

The canal crosses the Pennines from Manchester to Sowerby Bridge; it opened fully in 1804, the first of three trans-Pennine canals. The places the show used sit along it, so take a boat up the valley yourself, one lock per town.

Tuel Lane Lock, Sowerby Bridge. The boat has come in from the lower pound; the chamber is empty. Shut the bottom gates behind her.

Almost six metres to climb: the deepest canal lock in the UK. Here you have it to yourself; in life only the volunteer keepers work it.

Three locks, three towns.

Sowerby Bridge, where Catherine first sees Tommy; Hebden Bridge, where he hides; Todmorden, where the last gate drops instead of swinging.

Sally Wainwright went to school in Sowerby Bridge. In 2015 she told the Guardian that Halifax, Hebden Bridge, Ripponden, Sowerby Bridge and Elland are the area she thinks of as Happy Valley territory.

Hebden Bridge

Step aside.

The stone bridge dates from about 1510; an earlier timber bridge gave the town its name. It carried the main packhorse road from Halifax to Heptonstall and on into Lancashire.

Where this comes from

You are at the end of the bridge; the packhorses are coming the other way.

It is 7 feet 6 inches wide. A fully laden packhorse needed the whole width, so small triangular alcoves in the sides let people on foot step aside.

The film trail lists Nelson’s Wine Bar among the second-series locations, and Visit Calderdale’s listing says it was used for Happy Valley.

Established in 1997, it is a plant-based wine bar, restaurant and events space, with DJs most weekends, a monthly quiz and occasional live jazz.

Hebden Bridge station

VisitEngland names Hebden Bridge railway station as the station Ryan goes to in the third series.

Historic England lists it at Grade II: platforms, canopies and waiting rooms of 1892–93, built for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. The listing singles out its wooden signboards of the time, with good sans-serif lettering, and the glazed canopies on cast-iron posts.

A working station: the platforms are open to passengers, and the canal walk starts here.

The tops.

The film trail says Catherine visits the grave of her daughter, Rebecca, in Heptonstall Cemetery.

The old church of St Thomas à Becket was built in 1256–1260. After a great storm in 1847 the west face of its tower fell away. It stayed in use until 1854, when the present church of St Thomas the Apostle was finished: Heptonstall has two churches within one graveyard.

The ruins are looked after and open to the public; open-air services are sometimes held there.

Walk up the Buttress, the steep cobbled path from behind Hebden Bridge Town Hall, or take the bus: parking in the village is very limited. The graveyard is still in use, so go quietly.

The film trail lists West View Park, Warley, among the second-series locations.

Two local businessmen, H. C. McCrea and E. Robinson, paid to turn a derelict quarry into the park, the council took on its upkeep, and it opened in July 1896. McCrea chose the name for its views over the Norland hillside and the Pennine slopes.

A memorial to soldiers who fell in the South African Wars was added to the terrace in 1904.
