Two hitmen in a fairytale town, waiting for orders from their boss. One climbs the tower. The other would rather be anywhere else. Martin McDonagh’s 2008 film, with Colin Farrell as Ray and Brendan Gleeson as Ken.

Koningsbrug

The King’s Bridge is on the city film office’s list of In Bruges locations.

It was the hub of Bruges’ port from the 13th to the 15th century; today it is where the canal boats turn around.

The present bridge is a 20th-century one, built on the historic site.

366 steps,
47 bells.

The film’s bell tower is 83 metres high, and 366 steps must be climbed to reach the top. Ken climbs the narrow steps; the confrontation at the top was filmed on a studio mock-up because of the lack of space in the tower.

Tap a bell, or use the arrow keys. The big ones are on the left.

Every 20 minutes about 15 to 25 visitors may begin climbing the tower, and booking a time slot is recommended.

The Markt

Martin McDonagh said he loved the market square, “where most of the action takes place”. Ken’s fall from the Belfry ends on the Markt below, and it is here that Harry spots Ray.

The Belfry, 83 metres high, dominates the square, and horse-drawn carriages wait for fares in front of the Provincial Court.

The production notes put Ken in the queue at the Basilica of the Holy Blood, whose chapel holds the relic. The relic of the Holy Blood, said to have been brought to Bruges by crusaders, is kept in the upper chapel; the lower chapel of St Basil is Romanesque.
