Lost

Eyes open, on a beach. Ask the first question.

Open your eyes on Mokulēʻia, the North Shore beach where the crash camp was built (photo, March 2011). Oceanic 815 never left Hawaii: almost every place the survivors reached is somewhere on O‘ahu you can drive to before lunch.

Where the island is

Down the hatch

Enter the numbers.
Each one opens a place.

Hurley won the lottery with six numbers, and the hatch has them etched on its side. Type them into the terminal in order. Every number you get right prints one real place on O‘ahu.

Six numbers, six places: a crash beach, a camp beach, a waterfall, a cattle valley, a youth camp and an 800-year-old fishpond. All of them are on O‘ahu.

Flashbacks · the midpoint

Sydney is a convention hall.
Iraq is a crater.

The flashbacks went round the world; the crew went round O‘ahu. Pick a city, then make the cut.

Pick a flashback. The globe will find it.

Somewhere else

Six flashbacks: an airport, a wedding, an office, a prison, a village and a university.

The stations

The island’s research stations, its golf course and its submarine were built in a cattle valley, a youth camp and a fishpond. These patches are our own drawings; each one opens the real place.

Waimea Valley

Sawyer and Kate dove and jumped off the falls in Waimea Valley, though the posted rules say not to. An early scene of Kate and Sawyer diving for a briefcase of guns was shot in Waimea Valley; the underwater part was filmed in a dive pool in California. The pool is also where Paolo finds his diamonds, and where Hurley and Kate wake after Ajira Flight 316 crashes.

The falls are about 40 feet tall. Swimming is allowed only when conditions are safe and lifeguards are on duty. The valley is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 4pm.

In May 2004 Damon Lindelof told the Honolulu Star-Bulletin that he and J. J. Abrams expected to make the whole series in Hawaii. It was an island show, he said, and he could not picture shooting it in Malibu.
