Destiny Hope Cyrus was born on 23 November 1992 in Franklin, Tennessee, to Tish and Billy Ray Cyrus. Her parents nicknamed her “Smiley” because she smiled so much as a baby, then shortened it to Miley; in 2008 she legally became Miley Ray Cyrus.

The Cyrus farmhouse stands on 500 acres of land outside Nashville. Dolly Parton is her godmother.

A scene of Hannah Montana: The Movie was shot in the Belk shoe department at Cool Springs Galleria in Franklin, and Franklin High School stood in for Seaview High. She still owns a home in her hometown of Franklin.

The film goes home

Filming of Hannah Montana: The Movie began in April 2008, much of it in Columbia, Tennessee. She had wanted the film to go home to Tennessee, and the story takes Miley Stewart back to her grandmother’s small town.

Some 500 paid extras and 1,500 volunteers turned out for the musical numbers. The film opened on 10 April 2009 and took $169.2 million worldwide on a $30 million budget.

Its soundtrack gave her a fourth number-one album at 16, the youngest artist to reach that.

Sunset Bronson Studios

Hannah Montana was recorded in front of a live studio audience at Sunset Bronson Studios on Thursdays and Fridays. The lot was still called Tribune Studios then, and she spent up to eight and a half hours a day on set, with school lessons there too.

The series premiered on 24 March 2006 to the biggest audience a Disney Channel programme had had.

Warner Bros. filmed The Jazz Singer, the first talking feature, on this lot in 1927. It took the name Sunset Bronson Studios in 2008; the original executive building has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2002.

1 February 2008The Best of Both Worlds Concert opened in Disney Digital 3-D, with her on stage as herself and as Hannah Montana; it was meant to run for one week and ran longer.

Hannah, in the round

While the pilot was being filmed, she gave a concert as Hannah Montana at the Glendale Centre Theatre to get footage for the show.

The theatre at 324 North Orange Street now trades as the Nocturne Theatre, and the audience still sits round the stage on every side.

The VMAs at the Barclays Center

The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards were held at the Barclays Center on 25 August 2013, the first in New York City outside Manhattan.

She performed a medley with Robin Thicke. Critics broadly panned it, and it drew widespread media attention.

Wrecking Ball came out the same day, and its cover and the cover of Bangerz were unveiled before the show. Wrecking Ball became her first number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Bangerz came out on 4 October 2013 and went in at number one with 270,000 copies in its first week.

Unplugged on Gower Street

Her MTV Unplugged was taped at Sunset Gower, and Madonna joined her for a song. It aired on 29 January 2014, playing songs from Bangerz, and became the highest-rated MTV Unplugged in a decade.

The 14-acre lot was Columbia Pictures’ home, where It Happened One Night was made in 1934.

A house that is gone.

In November 2018 the Malibu home she shared with Liam Hemsworth burned down in the Woolsey Fire.

The fire started on 8 November and destroyed 1,643 structures; hundreds of Malibu houses were destroyed or damaged on both sides of Pacific Coast Highway.

Her Happy Hippie Foundation gave $500,000 to the Malibu Foundation, set up for relief after the 2018 wildfires.

Billboard’s 2017 interview found her at Rainbow Land, her own studio, in the Malibu years. In 2020 she dropped two planned EPs, citing changes in her life that included the burning of the house.

A week round a piano

Flowers was written at Sunset Sound in January 2022 by Miley Cyrus, Gregory “Aldae” Hein and Michael Pollack, gathered round a piano over a week of sessions.

It began as a slower, sadder ballad; the first demo was just her voice and Pollack on a Rhodes piano.

Disney’s director of recording, Tutti Camarata, built the studio from a former car-repair garage in 1958.

Her first Grammys

The 66th Grammy Awards were held at Crypto.com Arena on 4 February 2024. Flowers won Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance: her first Grammys.

She gave the first televised performance of Flowers that night.

The youngest Legend

On Sunday 11 August 2024 she was made a Disney Legend at the Honda Center, during the D23 fan convention. At 31 she was the youngest person to receive the award.

The ceremony had moved there from the Anaheim Convention Center down the street; Ryan Seacrest hosted.

Each living Legend gets a bronze plaque of their handprints and signature in Legends Plaza at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank.
