PoldarkBal: the mines, the coves, the moor

Ross comes home to a ruined mine and works it back to life. The mines are still on the cliffs. One engine still runs on steam.

The beam is working.

Work the beam.
Wind the mines to grass.

It is the only Cornish beam engine anywhere in the world still in steam on its original site. Volunteers known as the “Greasy Gang” restored it after 60 years out of use. Every load you bring up is a mine you can stand beside.

Levant Mine and Beam Engine

Levant’s buildings play Tressiders Rolling Mill. In series two Ross and Francis argue here, though the actors were standing on a platform somewhere else.

The engine was built in 1840; a tour takes in the engine, the skip shaft, the Man Engine tunnel and the winder house.

The night-time wrecking scenes are filmed at Church Cove.

Next door is Dollar Cove, named after the Spanish ship San Salvador, wrecked there in 1669 with a cargo of silver dollars. People say coins still wash up on the beach after storms.

Over a bank holiday weekend in May 2014, Corsham’s High Street became the busy port of Truro for the first series.

The Red Lion became an inn and a haberdashery was made for the scenes; the Town Hall held the extras and props.

The crew never had to come back after the first series, but they shot so much that Corsham kept appearing.

Charlestown

Charlestown doubles as Truro and Falmouth; Captain Andrew Blamey lives and sails from the inner harbour. Its beach and slipway play St Mary’s, on the Isles of Scilly, when Ross meets the exiled Mark Daniels in series two.

The village was built by the landowner Charles Rashleigh, to ship copper to South Wales and bring coal in. The Anny of Charlestown, a topsail schooner built in Denmark in 1930, is based in the harbour.

Flat Rocks, Perranporth

Where it began:
a seat in the dunes.

Winston Graham moved to Perranporth at seventeen, and spent much of his life there. His plaque at Flat Rocks says he wrote Demelza in his chalet, “Lech Carrygy”, here.

Ross Poldark came out in 1945; eleven more followed, the last, Bella Poldark, in 2002. The first books run from 1783 to 1787; Nampara and Wheal Leisure are invented, Truro is real.

The 1970s BBC series was so popular that vicars moved or cancelled church services rather than hold them while Poldark was on.

A memorial seat in the dunes above the beach. Park long-stay at the Wheal Leisure car park; the Perranzabuloe Museum is just off the high street.
