RadioheadA school room in Abingdon to a round stage in Greenwich

A band named after the one day they could rehearse, an album made in a house with ghosts, another named after a tree, and one you could buy for whatever you liked. Most of their places cost nothing to stand in.

Park Road, Abingdon · Mid-1980s

On a Friday, after a day.

The Library of Congress essay on OK Computer says the members met at Abingdon School, then a boys’ school.

Seven days. Pick one.

The Ashmolean puts the band’s beginning in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, in the mid-1980s.

A working independent school: see it from Park Road. The grounds and the music school are for pupils.

Twenty-five in the room

In November 1991 they played there again. It was only their eighth gig, and 25 A&R people came to watch.

Nobody agrees when On a Friday first played the Jericho Tavern: some sources say 1986, others 1987. They signed to Parlophone, then part of EMI, soon after.

Supergrass played their first gig there in 1993, billed as Theodore Supergrass.

Still a music pub, busiest at weekends: go in for a drink, or for a gig upstairs.

A house that talks back.

st-catherines-court.txt

St Catherine’s Court. OK Computer was recorded in a 15th-century mansion near Bath called St Catherine’s Court, then owned by the actor Jane Seymour. He said ghosts talked to him in his sleep. The band recorded Paranoid Android in the house’s wooden ballroom, after lighting candles.

Press Speak and the computer reads the house.

Thom Yorke said he spent the whole time there frightened, because everything reminded him of his own mortality.

The Cure made Wild Mood Swings there, and New Order worked on part of Waiting for the Sirens’ Call. The house was built as a priory grange for the monks of Bath Abbey, and is named after the 12th-century Church of St Catherine nearby.

In 2024 the 14-acre estate went up for sale at £12.5 million.

A private house. The lanes of the St Catherine valley pass close by; keep to them, and do not go up the drive.

Two students, one long collaboration

Thom Yorke and Stanley Donwood, both born in 1968, became friends at Exeter University, where both studied English literature and fine art.

Their partnership began in earnest when Donwood designed the cover of the single My Iron Lung in 1994. Donwood reckons they have been working together for about 30 years.

The Ashmolean says the OK Computer artwork was made on a computer, under a challenge they set themselves.

The campus grounds and gardens are open every day of the year. The roads are private, so you walk at your own risk; visitor parking is free outside 8am–6pm on weekdays.

Ed O’Brien and Phil Selway remembered starting the new album in Paris in early 1999, while questioning the way the band had always worked.

The bear, and where the art went

Donwood’s bear first turned up in 2000, in a crudely drawn comic strip called Test Specimens on the band’s website.

Fans call it the Modified Bear; it has also gone by Blinky and Despot Bear. Yorke told Blender in 2001 that it grew out of a deep worry about genetic engineering. The bear never made it on to an album cover.

From 6 August 2025 to 11 January 2026 the Ashmolean showed more than 180 works by Stanley Donwood and Thom Yorke, from original album-cover paintings to digital pieces and etchings. The museum says the two once sneaked into the basement of Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital to film a resuscitation dummy for an early Radiohead cover.

Open daily, 10am to 5pm, last entry 4.45pm. General admission is free; special exhibitions are charged.

Home in the rain

On 7 July 2001 Radiohead came home to South Park: their first show in Oxford for five years.

NME counted 35,000 fans, soaked by the rain. Supergrass and an acoustic Beck played before them; Sigur Rós and Humphrey Lyttelton earlier in the day. Hot Press heard a shaky start, then a band that did not put a foot wrong once the nerves settled.

A city park, open to everyone. Walk up the slope for the view back over the spires.

In September 2026 the band announced 16 Australian shows for May and June 2027, their first there in 15 years.
