Rod Stewart

A tartan is a sett: every coloured thread crosses every other. His places work the same way. A Highgate street crosses a Twickenham platform; a Barnes studio crosses a beach in Rio.

A paper round
on Archway Road.

Rod Stewart was born on 10 January 1945 in the house that stood at No. 507 Archway Road, the youngest of five children.

His father, a builder, later bought a newsagent further up Archway Road; the family lived above the shop and Rod delivered papers. His father and two brothers loved football and started a local team, the Highgate Redwings. In the early days he kept his spiky hair up with sugar water.

The house he was born in no longer stands and the family shop was a private home above a newsagent: walk the road, but nothing here is open to visit, and no house is mapped.

Fortismere School (William Grimshaw)

He went to Highgate Primary and then William Grimshaw School, which is now Fortismere. He captained the school football team and played centre-half for Middlesex Schoolboys.

After school came a run of unskilled jobs; then he borrowed money from his brother for a guitar and busked and played London clubs.

Baldry offered him a gig on the spot.

Olympic Studios, Barnes

Rod Stewart recorded his first album, An Old Raincoat Won’t Ever Let You Down, at Olympic. The Faces recorded A Nod Is As Good As a Wink… to a Blind Horse here between March and September 1971, co-producing with Glyn Johns.

It came out that November, reached No. 2 in Britain and No. 6 in America, and “Stay With Me” went to No. 6 in the UK.

The studio moved to Barnes in 1967, into a former TV studio in a building that began as a cinema; it closed in February 2009. Today it is a cinema, with a bar and bistro and a members’ club.

Now a cinema with a bar and bistro, open daily; a small recording studio works in the building again.

Morgan Studios, Willesden

Morgan opened in an old warehouse at Maybury Gardens, off Willesden High Road, in late 1967. Rod Stewart came back in 1971 to record Every Picture Tells a Story, with “Maggie May”.

A bar replaced the old ground-floor studio; Stewart remembered a few beers downstairs before going up to record, feel over perfection. Ray Jackson of Lindisfarne, hired for “Mandolin Wind”, made up the mandolin ending of “Maggie May” on the spot.

The studios were sold off in the 1980s; Maybury Gardens is a public street, and nothing inside is open to visit.

Side A: “Reason to Believe”. Radio has not turned it over yet.

“Maggie May” was the B-side of “Reason to Believe” until radio flipped the single; it then topped the UK and US charts at the same time, and so did the album.

The Gaumont State, Kilburn

On 23 December 1974 the Faces played the Kilburn State, often listed as their final UK concert.

Keith Richards joined them for “Sweet Little Rock’n Roller”, “I’d Rather Go Blind” and “Twistin’ the Night Away”.

The cinema opened on 20 December 1937 with just over 4,000 seats; it is listed Grade II*. A church bought it in January 2008 and reopened it as Ruach Ministries on 10 July 2010.

Songfacts says he recorded his “Sailing” at Muscle Shoals Sound, with a choir assembled by Bob Crewe, after Dowd woke him early to sing.

“Sailing” was the Sutherland Brothers’ song, from 1972; it became his third UK No. 1, then climbed to No. 3 again as the theme of a BBC series about HMS Ark Royal.
