Ariana Grande-Butera was born in Boca Raton, Florida, on 26 June 1993. Her father, Edward Butera, ran a graphic design firm in Boca Raton.
As a child she acted with the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theater: the title role in Annie, and its Wizard of Oz and Beauty and the Beast. She went to Pine Crest School, then North Broward Preparatory.

Backstage at Wicked, Kristin Chenoweth gave a ten-year-old a witch’s wand and some magical shower gel. Blow a bubble from it; each one carries a year. Pop it to stand in the room she was in.

On 22 May 2017, as people were leaving her concert at Manchester Arena, a bomb killed 22 people and hurt more than a thousand.
She suspended the rest of the tour; it began again in Paris on 7 June 2017.

The Glade of Light, a memorial garden to the 22, opened to the public on 5 January 2022. Their names are on a white marble halo; families placed memory capsules inside it. A hawthorn at the centre flowers white around the anniversary, and the planting is of plants that grow wild in Britain.

4 June 2017 · Old Trafford
On 4 June 2017, two weeks later, she came back for One Love Manchester, a benefit concert at Old Trafford Cricket Ground. About 14,000 people who had been at the arena concert could apply for free tickets. During the concert the British Red Cross took £2.35 million for the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund. Manchester City Council made her the city’s first honorary citizen.

Nine million tulips were grown for it in Norfolk. Munchkinland was built for real at Ivinghoe: cottages, thatched roofs and a yellow brick road. The village was sunk into the ground so that it could rise out of the tulip fields.
The tulips were grown on 6.8 acres with the flower farmer Mark Eves.
The village stands above the field.

A small Buckinghamshire village near Leighton Buzzard. The set was on farmland and has gone; walk the village and the hills round it.
Borehamwood, Hertfordshire
Wicked was mainly filmed at Sky Studios Elstree in Borehamwood, on its 12 sound stages. Shiz University’s rotating library and the Wizard’s inner sanctum were shot there. Elstree Studios and Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden gave the film more stages. Wicked used 17 sound stages across three studios.

2 March 2025 · Hollywood Boulevard
On 2 March 2025 she opened the 97th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre, singing Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz. Then she and Cynthia Erivo sang Home and Defying Gravity.
She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress as Glinda; Wicked won for costume design and production design.
In Wicked she is credited as Ariana Grande-Butera, the name she had when she saw the show at ten. She called it full circle.
