Apeshit at the Louvre

Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s video makes the Louvre’s art, ceremonial staircases and courtyard part of its performance space.

In Apeshit, Beyoncé and Jay-Z perform inside one of the world’s most recognisable museums. The Louvre is more than an elegant backdrop: galleries, artworks, a monumental staircase and the glass pyramid structure the video’s visual journey. The film gives a familiar cultural institution another way of being encountered.

Markers identify buildings or documented location references. They do not mark an exact recording room, stage position or camera angle.

A route through the collection

France’s official tourism account identifies the Mona Lisa at the opening and close, dancers on the Daru staircase beneath the Winged Victory of Samothrace, and scenes before Jacques-Louis David’s Coronation of Napoleon. These settings alternate between an individual artwork and the architecture surrounding it. The movement matters: a museum usually asks visitors to look at objects, while the video places bodies and choreography within that act of looking. The sequence can be followed through named spaces rather than an invented generic palace. [1]

From galleries to courtyard

The Venus de Milo, Great Sphinx of Tanis and pyramid in the Cour Napoléon also appear in the tourism board’s account. Their different forms give the video a route across sculpture, ceremonial painting and museum architecture. Seen together, they turn the Louvre into a connected performance setting. This World keeps those rooms and exterior spaces within the museum’s existing Place identity: a visitor can explore their relationships without treating each artwork as a separate address. [1]
