555 California Street at Kearny Street, Financial District
555 California Street
Callahan walks the roof of the Bank of America tower, looks down on a hotel pool 415 feet below and finds a ransom note addressed to the City of San Francisco.
It rises 52 storeys and 779 feet. Finished in 1969, it was the tallest building west of the Mississippi until the Transamerica Pyramid in 1972.
It was Bank of America’s world headquarters until the 1998 merger with NationsBank; it is now 555 California Street.
The flat gravel roof Callahan walks round can still be picked out from above; the cooling towers behind him have been replaced.
An office tower; the roof is closed. Look up at it from California Street, or from Kearny Street towards Chinatown.
