The Buena Vista

In the first chapter Mary Ann Singleton, on her fifth night in San Francisco, drinks three Irish coffees at the Buena Vista and decides to call her mother in Cleveland.

She makes the call outside, by the cable-car stop next to the café, to say she is not going back.

The Buena Vista began serving Irish coffee on 10 November 1952, after the travel writer Stanton Delaplane and the owner Jack Koeppler worked out how to make the cream float.

Marina Safeway

Tales of the City began here. In 1976 Maupin tried to write a newspaper story about the Marina Safeway, then a well-known pick-up spot on Wednesday nights; when no one would talk honestly, he turned it into fiction.

Olympia Dukakis in May 2019, a month before she was Anna Madrigal again.

Twenty-six years after the first series, Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis came back as Mary Ann and Mrs Madrigal, with Paul Gross as Brian and Barbara Garrick as DeDe; Murray Bartlett played Michael, and Elliot Page, credited as Ellen Page, played Shawna. Ten episodes, made by Lauren Morelli with a writers’ room that was entirely LGBTQ.

The inside of 28 Barbary Lane was built in New York. The outside was San Francisco: the Castro, the Mission, the Tenderloin, North Beach. It won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Limited Series, the third for Tales of the City.
