Decca Studios

On 9 September 1967, after hours, the producer Mike Vernon quietly let the new band in to record: Fleetwood, Brunning, Spencer and Green.

Historic England names Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac among the blues bands who made key records here in the later 1960s, with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and Ten Years After.

Built in 1884 as workshops, the building was a town hall, then a recording studio from 1928. Decca took it over in 1937 and stayed until 1981. It was listed at Grade II in 2021 as the earliest surviving commercial recording studio complex in Britain.

Lindsey Buckingham grew up in Atherton and went to Menlo-Atherton High School. Stevie Nicks was at the same school, a year ahead of him.

From 1966 he played bass and sang in a school band, the Fritz Rabyne Memorial Band, shortened to Fritz in 1967. He asked Nicks to join it as a backing singer.

In 1972 the two made demos on a four-track recorder at his father’s coffee plant in Daly City, then drove to Los Angeles. Polydor released their album, Buckingham Nicks, in September 1973 and dropped the duo soon after for poor sales.

Cut the leader in.

Rumours began here in February 1976. The band spent the first two months of the album in Sausalito.

The Record Plant opened at 2200 Bridgeway with a party on 29 October 1972, built as the industry’s first resort studio. Ken Caillat found the main room very dead, about 30 by 20 feet, and it took eight or nine days to get a sound he liked.

Christine McVie’s Songbird was recorded in an all-night session at the Zellerbach Auditorium, across the bay from Sausalito.

Caillat felt the song needed the sound of a concert hall. Today it is the main hall of Cal Performances, with 1,978 seats.

Studio D

Tusk was made in Studio D, the newest room at the Village Recorder, and Fleetwood Mac were the first band to use it.

Some work began in early summer 1978 after two months of rehearsal; the main sessions started in September, after the summer tour. It became a double album of 20 new songs from the band’s three songwriters.

Studio D is still taking sessions, and the studio’s own history page shows the band at work there.

In early June the band recorded the title track here, with 112 members of the USC Trojan Marching Band playing live in the outfield.

The song grew from a riff Buckingham played at soundchecks, called Stage Riff. Fleetwood had the idea for a marching band after hearing a local brass band in Barfleur, France.

One more night.

On 23 May 1997 the Rumours line-up played a single concert here for an MTV special, The Dance.

The five had not released an album together since Tango in the Night in 1987. The USC marching band came back to play Tusk and Don’t Stop.

The live album came out on 19 August 1997 and went straight in at number one in the US, the band’s first since Mirage in 1982.
