The Dance: a reunion in Burbank

The studio concert that brought five Fleetwood Mac musicians back together and renewed an earlier collaboration with USC.

On 23 May 1997, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood performed at Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank. Recorded for The Dance, the concert put the five musicians together again before a live album and a new tour carried the reunion further.

A concert before the tour

Rhino’s history places the Burbank performance before the album’s 19 August release and the tour’s September opening in Hartford. The sequence matters: the studio concert became a record before the reunion travelled through a succession of arenas. Burbank was the setting in which this particular return took recorded form, giving later audiences a shared performance to encounter. [1]

The returning marching band

USC’s Spirit of Troy records its appearances on both Tusk in 1979 and The Dance in 1997. The marching band’s participation gave the reunion another continuity with Fleetwood Mac’s earlier work. Alongside the five returning musicians stood a collaboration that had begun nearly two decades before. It connected the sound of a university ensemble with a rock band’s concert recording, widening the musical company through which the reunion was heard. [2]

From the studio to the road

Rhino dates the subsequent tour from 17 September to 27 November, ending at Madison Square Garden. The Dance was therefore a beginning as well as a retrospective. Songs drawn from the band’s history became material for a new run of performances after the Burbank recording. The live album preserves one setting within that larger return, rather than standing for every concert the reunited group subsequently played. [1]
