Forestry England says the opening sequence of Gladiator was shot in Bourne Wood in 1999.

Bourne Wood was the first Forestry England woodland given a permanent change of status to include filming as well as forestry.

Beside the battleground the crew builds a Roman camp round the emperor’s great tent, lit from the floor, with bulbs in the eaves so it never goes to black.

Fort Ricasoli

Malta Film Studios runs the fort as a shooting location. It was the Colosseum and the Roman backdrop in Gladiator.

The surviving blocks were built by the Order of Saint John in the late 17th century; British barracks were added in the 20th.

Through a severe winter, the designers build Rome’s palace district in Malta, with an old British military fort as the backdrop; the camera crew follow close behind the builders.

The Colosseum

The Flavian emperors built it in the 1st century AD; it is the largest amphitheatre in the world.

It held animal hunts and gladiatorial games until the end of antiquity. The games were abolished in 438 by order of Valentinian III.

The standard ticket covers the first and second levels, not the arena; separate tickets reach the arena, the underground and the attic.

Rome · the real gladiator school

The Ludus Magnus

It was the largest gladiator school in Rome, built under Domitian (81–96 AD).

In the middle stood a small elliptical training arena with seats for up to 3,000 people; rooms round the portico probably housed the gladiators.

It was found by chance in 1937 during building work. Only the northern half survives.

Closed to visitors for works since 1 August 2024. It lies beside Via Labicana, a few minutes’ walk east of the Colosseum.

The hill’s name, Palatium, gave modern languages their word for a palace.

Augustus chose the hill for his own house, and later emperors built their palaces round it, ending with the Domus Flavia and its private side, the Domus Augustana.
