James
Bond

Behind the title: Goldfinger being filmed at a filling station in Andermatt, 1964. The villains’ lairs were real places too, and most are open: a turning restaurant on a Swiss summit, a dam you can jump, an island you can sail to, and the desk in Jamaica where it began.

In the barrel: Schilthorn, Switzerland

Blofeld’s lair
turns every 45 minutes.

Named Piz Gloria in the film, the revolving summit restaurant was the headquarters of Blofeld and Spectre, and the name has stuck. Piz Gloria turns once around its own axis in 45 minutes. Turn it yourself.

To make the cableway look like Blofeld’s own, its five cabins were painted orange; they ran in that colour for more than 25 years.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was shot on the Schilthorn between 21 October 1968 and 17 May 1969.

The film paid for the summit station’s fixtures and fittings, which passed to the cableway; the cableway carried crew and kit free.

Bond World, the 007 Walk of Fame and the Bond Cinema are at the summit today.
