Tokyo--:--52Fcan’t sleep

Lost in Translation

Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson in Sofia Coppola’s 2003 film: two Americans in one Tokyo hotel, both awake at night. Ride down into the city, then take a day in Kyoto.

Park Hyatt Tokyo · Shinjuku Park Tower

Can’t sleep?
Take the lift.

Bob and Charlotte both stay at the Park Hyatt; the film’s scenes here include Charlotte’s room above the city, the bar and the pool. The hotel occupies the top floors of Shinjuku Park Tower, from the 39th to the 52nd. Japan’s tourist board says the Park Hyatt was the one place that gave the production two floors, for a short time.

Doors closed on 39. Press a floor.

Reopened in December 2025. The New York Bar on 52 opens daily 5pm–midnight, no reservations, over-20s only; a ¥3,300 cover applies from 6.30pm. It is a 12-minute walk from JR Shinjuku Station, or 8 minutes from Tochōmae on the Toei Ōedo Line.

Shibuya Crossing

Bob and Charlotte wade into the intersection on their way to explore the city. About 2,500 people, coming from three directions, cross every time the lights change. The film shows the busy intersection in front of Shibuya Station’s Hachikō Exit.

A public crossing, busy at every hour. Cross with the crowd when the lights change.

The gate is at the top of the steps.

The temple compound was built in the 13th century for the Emperor Kameyama and later became a Zen temple. The gate standing today was rebuilt in 1628 by Tōdō Takatora, to mourn his men who fell in the summer campaign at Osaka. It is about 22 metres high and counted among Japan’s three great gates.

Daily 8.40am–5pm to 30 November, 8.40am–4.30pm December to February; last entry 20 minutes before closing. Closed to visitors 28–31 December. Climbing the gate costs ¥600.
